Butterfly Weed is most often a distinctive bright orange but there is some variation in flower color, from deep red-orange to yellow.

Butterfly Weed needs a drier, well-drained location. In older mature plants the long tap root can extend down a foot or more. Due to the taproot they do not transplant well but are easy to start from seeds. The leaves are somewhat narrow, up to 1” and tapered, with no stem.

Even though this plant does not have the typical milky sap like most milkweeds it still is considered a milkweed and very much attracts Monarch caterpillars.
During the first year I started seeds I found 16 caterpillars on only 5 germinated plants! (see last pic)

Native plant seeds in general do not have very high germination rates. Plant a few seeds per 1 plant desired
